Highlights from the 2016 California Workers' Compensation & Risk Conference

Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, Inc. Consultants recently attended the California Workers' Compensation & Risk (CWC & Risk) Conference in Dana Point, CA. Participating in this event is a great way to keep up with changes in the workers' compensation market in the state of California. There were over 1,500 attendees, and the exhibitors included law firms, third-party administrators (TPAs), healthcare service providers and injury prevention companies. CWC & Risk 2016 focused on new workers compensation legal requirements and cost-containment challenges faced by California employers.

So much has been written about autonomous self-driving cars (automated vehicles or AV) and all of it is simply fascinating. The technology is evolving quickly and the research in this field will affect each and every one of us in unforeseen ways. Looking back just 7-8 years ago, smartphones were being adopted by the masses. My, how our lives have changed – generally for the better, but with some definite downsides. 
Higher Workers Compensation Rates for Florida
The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (FLOIR) reached a decision this week on the rate impact of the recent Supreme Court rulings on workers compensation by granting contingent approval of a 14.5% rate increase effective December 1, 2016.

I have been blessed, and do not take that for granted. I have a wonderful wife to whom I have been married for 22 years, three beautiful children, and a career that I enjoy and in which I have experienced some degree of success. However, as I think back, I have come to the realization that a different outcome to an event that occurred when I was in college could have caused a very different result.
A Look Into the DCIA 2016 Fall Forum
There was a degree of uncertainty among the participants due to Karen Weldin Steward, Insurance Commissioner for the past 8 years, being recently defeated by Trinidad Navarro in the Democratic primary election. Republican candidate Jeff Cragg is also running, and both candidates attended the conference.
