A Journey in Leadership
Throughout my career, I’ve encountered moments that made me question whether I truly belonged. But those experiences have also shaped my resilience, strengthened my resolve and fueled my commitment to helping others succeed.
I have often been the only woman in the room in a professional setting. I’ve heard comments like, “I can’t say that in front of her,” as though my presence were an intrusion rather than a contribution (or as though, if I weren’t present, certain boundaries could be crossed). These moments remind me why representation matters – not just in numbers, but in voice, influence and leadership. Diverse perspectives strengthen teams, drive innovation and create workplaces where everyone can thrive. Progress takes time, but every step forward counts.
Like many professionals, I’ve worked hard to advance my career. Yet, I’ve at times faced setbacks at organizations where promotion criteria seemed to change depending on the individual. When career paths are clear and equitable, we all benefit. For those in leadership, supporting the next generation means creating an environment where opportunities are based on talent and potential (not just tenure or tradition), and where the same rules apply to all.
Workplace culture also plays a powerful role in shaping a sense of belonging. Early in my career, I worked at a place where the actuarial staff were referred to as “the men,” and the administrative staff were referred to as “the girls.” Where did that leave me – the only female actuarial staff member? It sent an unspoken message about where I did, and didn’t, fit. Small exclusions, like being left out of casual lunches, reinforced that feeling.
Instead of allowing these experiences to define me, I used them as motivation. I pushed forward, found mentors and built a network of support. Now, I strive to make sure others don’t have to fight so hard to feel like they belong.
We all have a role in shaping workplace culture. If you’re in a position of influence, take the time to mentor and advocate for those whose paths may look different from your own. If you’re striving to grow, seek out opportunities to lead, speak up and make yourself heard. Let’s continue moving forward, together.
